Devolving Actions

Associated Paper

Nothing in life is truly original, but rather the collection of ideas and concepts that already exist to create a new perspective on the source material. These ideas are forged into these new forms through the acts of emulation and simulation, as imitation is the way the world develops, whether that is culturally or scientifically. To explore how these concepts are related I have created an analog emulation of Photoshop which is already a simulation of photography development and darkroom tools. While not every Photoshop tool can be emulated in this analog fashion I emulated the main functions that Photoshop is known for.

The layers inside the construction, that can be rearranged and altered, are elements of an image called “Jennifer in Paradise” which is widely considered the first image used in the original version of the Photoshop Program. This image is problematic, much like the power of editing images itself, as it is of Jennifer sitting topless on a beach in Bora Bora. Taken by her boyfriend at the time, John Knoll, who then used it to test out Photoshop's capabilities after the vacation. The use of this image communicates with the evolution of photo manipulation as well as the issues that have been prevalent in our society for years.
